BE My Guest

interactive installation during Museum Night 2015

The theme of the night at the Brakke Grond was hospitality. We created a ‘machine’ for encounters between strangers- a space to host a discussion on hospitality.

We hanged hundred small loafs of bread from the ceiling, wrapped first in instructions for a conversation between a guest and a host, then wrapped in white cloth where a tag hanged saying “Share this bread with a stranger”.

160 visitors untied the wraps and invited strangers to share the bread. Piles of salt and butter were provided. As the wrap unfolded, a conversation on feeling welcome, on borders, on what makes a ‘good’ host and a ‘good’ guest started. Conversations were on personal and global issues. It was the first time I work outside the black box and in interaction with the audience, where they actually complete the work.
